Courts/Legal Issues Agri-Biz & Commodities - Dairy & Dairy Products AP HC stays Visakha Dairy takeover Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Feb 7 THE Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday stayed the implementation of a State Government Ordinance for the takeover of Visakha Dairy management. The verdict was delivered in response to a writ petition filed by Mr A. Tulasi Rao, Chairman of the dairy and Telugu Desam leader. The State Government issued the Ordinance on Saturday night to take over the management of Visakha Dairy and seven other co-operative dairies in the State. On Sunday, the Visakhapatnam District Collector, Mr Anil Kumar Singhal assumed charge of the dairy as a Special Officer. Hailing the court ruling as a moral victory for the co-operative movement, Mr Tulasi Rao said the Congress Government should leave the dairy alone and make no further attempts to destabilise it. "In the interests of dairy farmers, the government should put an end to such attempts," he said. Mr K. Yerrannaidu, Telugu Desam parliamentary party leader, and Mr Y. Ramakrishnudu, former finance minister, said at a press meet here on Tuesday that the government's decision to take over the management of eight co-operative dairies was a body blow to the co-operative movement in the State and highly undemocratic. They said that the Congress Government was, in particular, gunning for the Visakha Dairy as it was under the control of Telugu Desam leaders. They said the dairy farmers in the three north-coastal districts - Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam - as well as East Godavari were solidly behind the management of the dairy, as it had taken several measures to boost milk production, as also welfare measures for the farmers. "Unable to take hold of the dairy through democratic means, the government has resorted to the illegal, autocratic method," they alleged and warned the government of a backlash from the farmers.
