TN chamber opposes compulsory use of Hindi

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Feb. 8

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has strongly opposed the recent move by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to make it compulsory for all companies (domestic as well as multinationals), marketing or advertising their products through the medium of Hindi, to correspond in Hindi with the Union Government and the Government to communicate only in Hindi with those companies.

It said the move prompted by the report of the Parliamentary Committee on National Language headed by the Union Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, is patently ill founded and wrought with highly disastrous consequences. Trade and industry would not accept such a drastic direction to be thrust upon them.

At a time when the country is peacefully marching ahead without any language-based agitations and people speaking different languages co-exist and peacefully carry on their vocations, this inappropriate decision of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs might ignite unwanted animosity. The move should be dropped, the chamber has appealed.
