MK varsity plans to establish windmill

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Feb. 8

A PROPOSAL to establish a windmill to offset the rising expenditure on electricity is under consideration of the Madurai Kamaraj University, whose annual budget provision for the purpose during the 2005-06 academic year is Rs 1.71 crore.

The Vice-Chancellor, Dr P. Maruthamuthu, has given in-principle nod to the idea mooted by the School of Energy Sciences.

With the annual current bill for 2006-07 expected to touch Rs 2 crore, the proposal is under serious consideration with a view to utilise the expertise of the faculty in the University's energy department, the Vice-Chancellor told Business Line on Wednesday.

The School of Energy has worked out the economics for the windmill project and concluded that the University would stand to gain not less than Rs 50 lakh a year by entering in to an arrangement with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), which would purchase the power from the University.

The windmill may come up at any of the windy areas in the State so that the electricity required by the University could be drawn from the nearest power grid of TNEB, Dr Maruthamuthu said.

The proposed capacity of the windmill would be 1.25 MW.

The wind speed required is 15 km per hour and the total cost of windmill has been tentatively fixed at Rs 5.65 crore. As per the proposal, the power generation is to be 32 lakh units a year, he added.
