THE 14th National Space Science Symposium (NSSS 2006) is being organised at the Department of Physics, Andhra University, for three days from Thursday.
Prof. L. Venugopala Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said the seminar would cover various aspects in astronomy and astrophysics, planetary exploration, solar emissions and several other related subjects.
"It will provide a fascinating glimpse of the latest developments in space sciences and will be of immense educative value to the students, professors and the public," he said.
Prof. U.R Rao, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Chairman of the advisory committee on space, said space sciences had made spectacular advances in recent times and their applications were also many.
He said a number of new bodies had been found of late in space, some of them big enough to qualify as planets.
"However, we have no precise definition of a planet and therefore certain difficulties crop up."
On India's lunar mission, he said there was still a long way to go and an observatory on the Moon would be of immense help to future research.
Answering a query, he said colonisation of Mars may be possible in future. "But right now we don't have definite information whether there is water there."
He said research was going on in the country to develop more sophisticated versions of cryogenic engines and "we may get positive results in a few years."
