Oilseeds & Edible Oil Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Oilmeal exports increase 36 pc Our Bureau
Mumbai , Feb. 8 THE country's oilmeal exports increased 36 per cent to 29,50,850 tonnes during the first 10 months (April 2005-January 2006) of the current fiscal compared with 21,67,653 tonnes in the year-ago period. Oilmeal exports in January stood at 5,48,725 tonnes against 2,16,846 tonnes in January 2005, according to data compiled by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA). Oilmeal exports from the country are expected to maintain this pace on the back of firm world demand and India's price competitiveness. Exports are expected to be over 35 lakh tonnes this fiscal compared with 26.9 lakh tonnes last year (2004-05) and 33.2 lakh tonnes in 2003-04. Soyabean meal accounted for the bulk of the meal exports. The Far-East markets operating at very low inventory and short in last three months, increased their buying which boosted exports in December and January, according to SEA release. Strong rupee, better realisation coinciding with Indian meal being most competitive, easy availability and increased movement in container load pushed exports of soyabean meal higher to 21,25,000 tonnes (14,60,000 tonnes). Exports of castor meal increased to 1,76,000 tonnes (55,000 tonnes). Groundnut meal more or less maintained its share, while rapeseed meal exports were down by 50,000 tonnes. Exports of rice bran extraction were 86,000 tonnes (43,000 tonnes). Total exports from Kandla were reported at 17,62,275 tonnes (60 per cent of total exports), followed by Mumbai which handled 5,14,650 tonnes (17 per cent), Vizag handled 2,70,025 tonnes (9 per cent), Bedi handled 2,56,875 tonnes (9 per cent), Kakinada handled 81,975 tonnes (3 per cent) and Bhavnagar handled 63,775 tonnes (2 per cent).
