Kolkata , Feb. 8 AIRTEL will set up its eastern region telecom hub in Kolkata. This was stated by Mr Rajan Bharti Mittal, Joint Managing Director of Bharti Tele-ventures Ltd, while talking to newspersons shortly after the West Bengal Government handed over a three-acre plot at Sunrise City, Nonadanga, to the company for the purpose. Bharti Tele-ventures has paid the West Bengal Government Rs 1.2 crore per acre. Mr Mittal said the eastern region telecom hub would be ready within 18 months. It would incorporate a switching centre, technology centers, call centre and also showcase latest technology and product offerings by Airtel. Besides Kolkata and West Bengal, the hub would service Airtel operations in other eastern States such as Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar. According to him, Airtel would launch fixed line telephone services in Kolkata under the Airtel brand in April. To begin with, the company was expecting 50,000-100,000 customers. This would be followed by broadband offerings. With this, Airtel would emerge as an integrated telecom player with a presence in fixed line, wireless telephony and broadband. Mr Mittal said Bharti Tele-ventures had invested Rs 980 crore in Kolkata. A further Rs 1,100 crore investment would be made in 2006-07. The company's investments in other parts of the eastern region would go up from Rs 700 crore at present to Rs 1,800 crore in the next fiscal.
