Dakshina Kannada NGO to take up projects in Rajasthan

A.J. Vinayak

Mangalore , Feb. 8

THE Dakshina Kannada-based NGO, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), is now planning to spread its activities in other StatesIt has decided to venture into two districts in Rajasthan.

Sources in SKDRDP told Business Line that the NGO is planning to replicate its successful rural development model in Jalawar and Baran districts of Rajasthan. SKDRDP will scout for stakeholder organisations for rural development activities in that State. A detailed project report is being prepared for this purpose. "We are hopeful of signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rajasthan Government soon in this regard," the sources said.

Asked about the reasons for identifying Jalawar and Baran, they said that both of these districts are similar to Dakshina Kannada in many respects. Though they have irrigation facilities and receive good rainfall, poverty still prevails there.

Apart from taking up social empowerment in those districts, SKDRDP will focus on micro-finance and micro-insurance activities.

Formation of self-help groups (SHGs) is a medium for taking up rural development activities, they added.

Recently, the Lok Sabha MP, Mr Rahul Gandhi, visited Dharmasthala to study SKDRDP model of rural development to implement it in his constituency. The sources claimed that SKDRDP was one of the models for RBI to come out with an order on `Business Correspondents' for public sector banks.
