Environment `Motivate people to conserve natural resources' Our Bureau
Mangalore , Feb. 9 EXPERTS at a workshop on `Participatory research methods for the assessment of coastal resources' here have stressed the need for motivating people on conserving natural resources. Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural function of workshop, Dr Krishna Kothai, Director of Centre for Rural Development Studies, Udupi, said natural resources could not be replaced. They have to be conserved. People will have to be educated about the need for conserving forest, water, estuaries and mangroves. Stating that the Karnataka Government has devolved around 30 development projects to gram panchayat institutions, he said many of them belonged to natural resource conservation. He urged the gram panchayat members to take active role in natural resource conservation activities. The four-day CELC-Ford Foundation workshop is being jointly organised by College of Fisheries, Mangalore; the Dakshina Kannada Parisarasaktha Okkoota; the Covenant Centre for Development, Madurai; and Snehakunja Trust, Kasarakod, Uttara Kannada district. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Utkarsh Ghate of CELC-Ford Foundation, said the workshop aimed at comprehensive community building programme through participatory approach. Prof Ramachandra Bhat, workshop coordinator, said the workshop was a part of the project on coastal and marine conservation strategies. The project aims to develop examples of ecologically and economically viable livelihood enterprises in select project sites by involving community organisations. The intention of the project is to develop small-scale site-specific enterprises that are economically sustainable with potential for replication in other regions, he added.
