THE second edition of the Golden Leaf India Awards Southern Tea Competition — 2006 (TGLIA) hasevoked an overwhelming response, according to the convener of the Organising Committee, Mr N. Dharmaraj.

A total of 32 categories have been identified for the competition.

About 194 entries (grades) would enter the first level of screening on February 11 at the United Planters' Association of Southern India.

"Compared to the last edition, the competition this year would be intense as we have already registered a 45 per cent increase in the entries," Mr Dharmaraj said.

According to him, the estate/ factory participation had risen from 79 to 87.

There are 58 entries competing in orthodox leaf category, 21 in orthodox fanning, 47 in CTC Leaf and 51 in CTC fanning.

In the organic categories, the total entries received stood at 17.

Samples have been drawn from the back-up quantities for the first level of screening. Mr Dharmaraj said a nine-member jury, representing different segments of the trade, would evaluate the 194 samples on February 11 and 12 and the process of selecting the best teas from the different agro climatic regions would be based on a multi-layer screening process to capture the various quality attributes of tea in an objective manner.

This would be followed by a final level of screening at Dubai on February 26, to coincide with the Global Dubai Tea Forum 2006.
