Hyderabad , Feb. 9

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has issued directions to expedite work on the first phase of work on the Outer Ring Road (ORR), gas pipelines, while reviving the modernisation plans for Rajahmundry and Kadapa airstrips and Secunderabad railway station.

After a review meeting on the infrastructure sector with the Chief Minister, and other senior officials, the Mines and Geology Minister, Ms. Sabita Reddy, briefing newspersons said officials were asked to expedite work on the ORR project, the first phase of the 22-km stretch would cover Gachibowli to Shamshabad, where a greenfield international airport is coming up.

The Minister said consortia from Malaysia and Singapore and a Chennai developer had evinced interest to work on the phase one of ORR and the Government is in the process of working out modalities.

If the agreement did not come through, Hyderabad Urban Development Authorities (HUDA) would commence work. The ORR covering a stretch of 159 km seeks to decongest the city and facilitate expansion.

Ms. Sabitha Reddy said proposals had been prepared on the requirement of gas in the State and the Chief Minister wanted the industries department to prepare a blueprint on laying of gas pipelines in the State.

"After the State's requirement of gas was met, supply to other States will be done. Fifty per cent of the State's gas requirement would be diverted to the gas-based power plants," she said.

Dr Reddy wanted proposals to revive the Kadapa airport and improve the facilities at the Madhurapudi airstrip near Rajahmundry.

Alongside this initiative, the Government decided to renovate the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in New Delhi. The Secunderabad railway station would be renovated on the lines of the Toronto station in Canada.
