NEW DELHI: In order to arrest the increasing sugar price, the Department of Food & Public Distribution has released additional quota of 1.5 lakh tonnes (lt) of free-sale sugar for February. Along with this additional quota, the total quota released for the month is 14.5 lt, said a release.

These steps are expected to help in containing the prices of free-sale sugar in the open market. The Government may also release additional free-sale sugar, if required. It has also been decided that the entire quota for February must be sold by the month-end.

The Department of Food and Public Distribution has also decided to increase the March quota from 12.5 lt to 14 lt. It has also been decided that the entire quota forMarch must also be sold by month-end.

The unsold free sale sugar during the month would be converted into levy sugar. For this purpose, administrative arrangements are also planned for inspection of sugar mills in case of complaint of short-sale of sugar, it added.
