CPI(M) to continue protests against airport privatisation

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Feb. 10

EVEN as it would continue to support the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to "force" the UPA Government to bring issues such as foreign direct investment in retail, privatisation of the airports' modernisation process and Iran to both Houses of Parliament, the All-India General Secretary of the CPI (M), Mr Prakash Karat, said here on Friday.

Speaking to newspersons after the conclusion of the two-day meeting of the CPI (M) Polit Bureau that was held here, Mr Karat said the party was trying to mobilise other secular parties from both within and outside the UPA for generating support on such issues.

Mr M.K. Pandhe, a CPI (M) Polit Bureau member and President of CITU, the CPI (M)'s labour arm, said the protests over the airports' privatisation process was not a thing of the past and would continue.

Mr Pande said that it was CITU's demand that trade unions must be allowed to be set up in the IT sector so that those working there have collective bargaining power, including the right to strike.

All members of the CPI (M) Polit Bureau, barring Mr Harkishan Singh Surjeet, attend the two-day meet that ended here today.
