Cabinet Secy told to review charges levied on foreigners

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 10

THE days of foreigners being asked to pay more for entry into monuments, staying in hotels and travel within the country could be numbered. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has asked the Cabinet Secretary to review the discriminatory charges being levied for services on foreign passport holders including non-resident Indians.

An official statement issued here on Friday said the Prime Minister had suggested that the Ministries concerned should examine the feasibility of ending this anomaly and treating all consumers of such services at par, irrespective of the nationality of the tourist.

At present, foreign passport holders have to pay higher charges for staying in hotels, visiting historical monuments and tourist sites, for domestic flights and as registration fees for international or other conferences or seminars, among others.
