IIMs may opt for uniform fee for PGP courses — Hike in fees on cards

Anjali Prayag

Bangalore , Feb. 11

ALL the six Indian Institutes of Management may finally opt for a uniform fee structure for PGP courses starting this academic year. This will also mean a hike in the fees.

"All six IIMs will jointly take a decision soon on this and most probably we will opt for a fee hike," said Dr Prakash G Apte, Director, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

He told Business Line that the intention was to bring all the institutes on par. "The younger IIMs increased the fee last year so that they gradually come on par with the older IIMs. We did not increase the fees last year."

With this year's increase all of them are expected to be on par, he said. Currently, a PGP at IIM, Bangalore, costs about Rs 1.5 lakh per annum. The fees at IIM, Ahmedabad, and IIM, Kolkata, are about the same, while PGP courses at the younger IIMs such as Kozhikode come with a fee tag of about Rs 1.3 lakh.

Though Dr Apte refused to say by how much the fee would be increased, sources say it could be 10-20 per cent.

Though the fee hike may be marginal, this may impact the perceived value of the institutes, says Mr Prahlad Rao, Director, Career Plan, a Bangalore-based institute that trains students for the Common Admission Test.

"If all institutes start charging uniform fees, students may expect the same quality of faculty everywhere," he says. This year, about 1.7 lakh students took the CAT, 6,000 of whom will be selected for the PGP courses in the six institutes.
