A Moorish Idol in an aquarium. The country's rich marine water resources around Andaman, Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands abound in myriad varieties of ornamental fish. The country's export of ornamental fish is dominated by native varieties, a majority of which comes from the North-East region.

The total exports of ornamental fish during 2004-05 were worth Rs 443.84 lakh and the markets catered to were in Asia, Europe and the US. The country contributes 5 per cent of global production and 4 per cent in value.
