SanDisk sees big market for removable memory cards

Preethi J.

Bangalore , Feb.12

REMOVABLE memory in the form of mobile media cards might replace CDs just as smart phones are replacing PCs. The handset market is also geared for a revolution in storage.

Soon you could pop out the secure digital (SD) memory card in your mobile, replace it with another and continue clicking photos. As Mr Sanjay Mehrotra, COO of SanDisk, said, "You could fill up one card with MP3s and once its capacity is over, you could buy another card and carry the old one around in your pocket."

Flash memory card maker SanDisk is promoting removable cards in a big way for use in smart phones. With the rise in sales of camera phones and MP3 phones, the company sees a huge market.

The mobile phone will be used as a TV (with recording function), high resolution camera, MP3 player, GPS, video game player, and even as a PC in the very near future. All these functions are possible because of the application of a removable storage device. In a year or two, people could own pieces of mobile media for their cell phones for different purposes, said Mr Dave Lee, Digital Media Product Manager, APAC , Kingston, another removable media card maker.
