Kerala Govt employees firm on strike

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Major employees and teachers' unions in the State have condemned the 2006-07 Budget for its failure to address a demand for pay revision effective from March 2002 and have vowed to go ahead with an indefinite strike plan from February 23.

The Kerala NGO Union said here the Finance Minister, Mr Vakkom Purushothaman's announcement that a decision on pay revision would be taken in consultation with political parties and service organisations would only do more harm than good.

Also, the budget was silent about DA arrears. The promise to restore DA and HRA to new recruits, taken away through an order on January 17, 2002, amounted to no more than just being a delayed statement of intention.

The budget promises were intended only to create the impression that the Government had given away benefits to employees and thus earn the goodwill of public by default, the union said.
