OneIndia tariff worries PCO booth owners

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 14

PCO BOOTH-owners across the country are demanding a relief package from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) as the OneIndia plan will make their business unviable.

PCO booth-owners get a fixed commission from the telecom companies depending on the total revenues generated. With STD tariffs being reduced to as low as Re 1, they have expressed concern over the lower commission due to a decrease in overall revenues from long-distance calls.

They said BSNL should provide an alternative package for making long-distance calls from a booth.

While announcing the OneIndia plan, BSNL officials had said that the impact on PCO booths would be nullified with new schemes and creation of newer revenue streams for the booth-owners.

BSNL and MTNL have dominated the PCO booth segment, but recently private telecom operators have made big inroads.

During July-September 2005, private operators, including Bharti Tele-Ventures, Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices, added nearly six 6-lakh PCO booths compared to 1 lakh added by the two PSUs
