Simple tax regime

This is with reference to, "Budget must focus on growth with equity," (Business Line, February 15).

The major problem is that of finding funds. Because of the opposititon the divestment route of PSUs appears almost closed.

The Finance Minister may think of bringing blackmoney out by introducing bond schemes or the like. But such amnesty schemes in whatever form they may come is bad economics, it need not be successful and could be demoralising to earnest taxpayers.

Expanding the service tax base may be another way out. Increased growth could bring increased revenue.

Better collectionefforts and modes could help.

Instead of taxing and then providing exemptions, why not he think of a simple tax regime without exemptions?
