Mangalore , Feb. 16

THE cargo traffic in the New Mangalore port is likely to get a boost soon with the South Western Railway planning to begin commercial operation of trains on the Bangalore-Mangalore route, via Hassan, within 15 days.

Addressing the members of the Mangalore Custom House Agents' Association (CHAA) at an interactive session here, Dr Anup Dayanand, Senior Divisional Operating Manager of South Western Railway, Mysore Division, said, "We will open this route for freight operation within 15 days." Already five trial runs have been done on this route. Application for the commercial operations of trains on the route will be submitted after the completion of the sixth trial run, he said.

Stating that the iron ore mines in Karnataka are sending around 30 million tonnes of ore to various major ports in the country, he said the commercial operation of the railway line will help the New Mangalore port receive around 6 million tonnes of iron ore a year.

Iron ore cargo can be transported from Bellary-Hospet region and from Sasanur-Chitradurga region of Karnataka to the New Mangalore port.

However, the rakes for the cargo will have to be booked at in those places only, he said.

Asked about the delay in the commissioning of the passenger trains on the route, he said the 54-km stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya on the route faced several problems during May-June last year, as there were some landslips in the region.

That was as setback for the early commissioning of the railway line. Track stabilisation is essential for the operation of passenger trains, he added.
