Kochi port's system study to improve info-tech facilities

V. Sajeev Kumar

Kochi , Feb. 16

THE Cochin Port Trust is carrying out a system study and technical assistance for strengthening its information technology facilities.

The study covers the existing systems, and identifies the areas proposed for automation and design of an information system as well as IT infrastructure, manpower and training requirements.

The port has engaged Mr G. Victor Thangadurai, former Deputy Director (EDP) of the Tuticorin Port, as the technical advisor to Kochi to make its IT system more reliable and user-friendly.

Though the port had achieved considerable progress in implementing a MIS (management information system) project in 1999, many of its activities are yet to be computerised. The Digital Equipment Corporation Alpha servers purchased in 1998 as part of the MIS project have almost become obsolete, as there is no upgradation path available for the servers.

Moreover, the present set-up and design of the database cannot bring about optimum performance (in terms of back-ups and storage).

The port officials during the staff meetings had discussed the limitations in the present set-up. Thus, the port management has decided to have a user-friendly support system for its IT set-up. The port will use the same technical expertise, which was provided for the MIS project implementation during 1997-2000. The major areas that were computerised under the project were finance and accounts, pay roll, pension, GPF accounting and port operating systems.
