Software IBM opens specialised lab to tap regional biz Our Bureau
Mr Willy Chiu, Vice-President, IBM
Bangalore , Feb. 16 IBM inaugurated a new lab in the city on Thursday. The Hi Performance On Demand Solutions Lab (HiPODS) is a specialised software and services division to tap regional customers. Mr Willy Chiu, Vice-President, HiPODS, IBM Software Group, said the lab was the largest by the company outside North America. HiPODS is part of IBM's $13-billion software services business. The lab will join seven others at US, UK, China, Japan and Switzerland. This number could increase to 10 or 12 next year, said Mr Chiu. Applications for distributing software and handling the increasing number of users in an organisation account for over 90 per cent of the $20 billion plus IT service industry in India, said Mr Harish Grama, Vice-President, IBM India Software Lab, explaining the need for the lab. The lab would "not just be a consulting division", he said. Engineers at the lab will code applications to suit the client and test its limits to ensure the software can withstand any onslaught. The focus of the lab will be on solving key client issues, reducing the time needed to adapt IT infrastructure, simplifying IT management, improving maintenance automation, optimising resources and improving reliability. The lab will offer virtualisation, capacity management and Web 2.0 technology services. The total headcount of the company in India, as of December 2005, was 38,500.
