CHENNAI: Singapore is targeting 7 lakh visitors from India this year compared to 5.8 lakh visitors in 2005, a 24 per cent increase, when it raked in tourist receipts of S$8.9 million, according to Ms Bridget Goh, Area Director, Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

The 2005 MasterCard MasterIndex of Consumer Confidence survey has identified Singapore as "one of the hottest destinations among Indian outbound travellers.'' India is the fifth largest source market for Singapore and efforts are on to move India up the ladder to the third position, she said.

STB will be stepping up its initiatives in India this year to increase tourist arrivals, Ms Kang Siew Kheng, Regional Director, said. The double-digit growth is because of the increasing affluence among the middle-class, the introduction of low-cost carriers. Indian tourists, on an average, spends 5.5 days in Singapore and spends about Rs 28,000 each of which 60 per cent is on shopping, most of which is for gold jewellery.

Singapore is being promoted as a destination for the family and also for young professionals. In addition, it is being promoted as a centre for education and healthcare. Ms Siew Kheng said Singapore is being positioned as the exchange capital of the world. There are some 1,500 Indian companies in Singapore. The MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) segment is one that STB will continue to focus on, she said.
