Infrastructure Second runway at Mangalore airport to be commissioned soon Our Bureau
Mangalore , Feb. 16 THE second runway at Mangalore airport will be ready for commissioning in one-and-a-half month, according to the Airport Director, Mr M.R. Vasudeva. Addressing the members of the Mangalore Custom House Agents' Association at an interactive meeting here on Wednesday, he said the concreting of the second runway has been completed. The runway can accommodate bigger aircraft. When members wanted to know about the procedures involved in getting international airport status to Mangalore airport, he said the airport should become a customs aerodrome first. It should have facilities for customs and immigration counters. Flights to West Asian countries can be operated from the customs aerodrome. To get international airport status, the airport should have some more infrastructure requirements like the terminal building near the new runway. Ms Jasdeep V. Singh, Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore, who was present on the occasion, said the Customs Department would extend full support to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to operate flights to international destinations. "We will cooperate with AAI and will not demand any additional facilities,'' she said. To a query, Mr Vasudeva said Air India Express has conducted a preliminary survey to operate flights to Sharjah. However, operation of flights to Sharjah depends on the availability of customs and immigration facility at the airport.
