Tea Kochi sales fetch better returns for tea producers in South P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Feb. 17 PRODUCERS who sold their teas through Kochi auctions earned more in 2005 than in 2004 in comparison to Coimbatore and Coonoor auctions. An analysis of the final figures indicates that prices declined in all these three auction centres in the South, but the volume sold was so high in Kochi that the earnings neutralised the loss in unit price. In Coimbatore also, the volume sold was more but the fall in unit price was so large that the overall earnings were lower. In Coonoor auctions, both the volume and the unit value were lower. In 2005, prices declined on an average to Rs 49.40 a kg in Kochi auctions from Rs 52.24 in 2004. But, the volume sold rose to 6.03 crore kgs from 5.32 crore kgs. Consequently, the overall earnings rose Rs 19.96 crore or 7.18 per cent to reach Rs 297.88 crore. In Coimbatore auctions, the prices dropped sharply from Rs 46.44 a kg to Rs 40.91. Hence, although the volume rose to 1.98 crore kgs from 1.8 crore kgs, the overall earnings dropped Rs 2.59 crore to Rs 81 crore. In the auctions conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association, prices dropped to Rs 36.03 a kg from Rs 43.30 even as the volume sold fell to 4.16 crore kgs from 4.43 crore kgs.
