THE power situation in Andhra Pradesh will improve considerably during the next two or three years as the State is set to add 4,000 MW by 2008 to the present installed capacity of 11,134 MW, according to Mr Md. Ali Shabbir, the State Minister for Information, Power and Coal.
At a press meet organised by Vizag Journalists' Forum here today, the Minister said that several coal-based projects, including the 2,000 MW plant at Krishnpatnam, were coming up.
Admitting that there was delay in obtaining gas linkage for four gas-based power plants in the State, the Minister said the ONGC and GAIL were not in a position to supply gas in accordance with their commitments. "However, the agreements entered into by the previous TDP Government make the State Government responsible for such contingencies too and we are saddled with a financial burden of Rs 1,000 crore or so," he said.
In response to a question whether there would be domestic power-cuts during the forthcoming summer, the Minister did not give a direct reply but said that the demand for power in the agricultural sector had gone up by 15 per cent this year. The Government was committed to free supply of power to the sector and seven hours power supply every day, though not at a stretch, he asserted.
