Animals & Livestock AP launches training programme for sheep-farmers Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Feb. 17 THE Andhra Pradesh Government in partnership with Metro Cash and Carry and DEG, the German Development Cooperation, have launched a sheep-farmer training programme. The State Minister for Animal Husbandry, Mr G.Surya Rao, on Friday inaugurated the Metro Sheep Training Programme. A training manual has also been prepared for the programme. The programme, funded by Metro Cash and Carry and DEG, has been designed and implemented in partnership with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Andhra Pradesh and Confederation of Kisan Organisations (CKO), a non-political farmer's organisation. The training programme will run in eight districts of Warangal, Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Medak, Prakasham, Mehboobnagar, Kurnool and Ananthpur, each with a sheep population in excess of one million. The training aims to reduce the mortality rate among sheep and increasing farmers' profitability and is expected to cover 22,600 sheep farmers in the State. It will help sheep farmers get exposure to modern and scientific sheep breeding techniques including breeding, nutrition and housing. The programme includes a module on common diseases and ailments affecting sheep and goats, their symptoms and cures. Vaccination and de-worming camps will run simultaneously whereby an estimated 5,60,000 sheep will be vaccinated. The Managing Director, Metro Cash & Carry India, Mr Harsh Bahadur, said, "We are delighted to join hands with the Government and Confederation of Kisan Organisations to run this training programme in the State as this will directly impact the livelihoods of a substantial number of sheep farmers in the State." Worldwide, Metro Cash & Carry has undertaken similar projects. Metro Cash & Carry is the sales division of German Metro Group, ranked 41st in Fortune magazine's list of the world's largest companies in 2005. Metro Cash & Carry India in association with the Karnataka Government recently completed a similar training programme in Karnataka where 18,000 sheep farmers were trained and over 3,75,000 sheep vaccinated across 12 districts.
