SBT staff stage sit-in

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan has called on the management of State Bank of Travancore (SBT) to desist from pressing with internal reforms that are `retrograde' in nature.

Reforming internally should not mean working at cross purposes with the best interests of the employees or even the society at large, Mr Achuthanandan said while inaugurating a protest sit-in by employees under the banner of the SBT Staff Union in front of the SBT head office here on Friday.

The sit-in was in protest against the management mulling a merger with SBI, the malfunctioning of the Core Banking Solution (CBS), delay in restoration of appointments made on compassionate grounds as well as of fresh recruitments.

The Leader of the Opposition further said that the bank merger moves were being cleverly manipulated to force closure of rural branches on the one hand and for shedding what the management perceived as `flab.'

A number of trade union leaders addressed the protestors, among whom were Mr P. Sadasivan Pillai, President, Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI); Mr A. Siaudeen, State Secretary, BEFI; Mr K.O. Habeeb, National Secretary, CITU; Mr Raja Kurup; Mr R. Chandrasenan; Mr K.G. James and Mr P.V. Jose.
