Politics Tax lawyer is CPM candidate for Chowringhee seat Our Bureau
Kolkata, Feb. 17 WEST BENGAL, many businessmen in the State believe, has of late become a happening place with a strong development agenda being pushed by the Left Front Government headed by Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The LF Committee surprised the business community by picking Prof Narayan Prasad Jain, senior tax advocate, guest faculty at National University Of Juridical Sciences and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta , and author, as a Front-nominated CPM candidate for the prestigious Chowringhee seat in the forthcoming State Assembly elections. Chowringhee and its adjacent areas in central Kolkata encompass the business district, and the candidates chosen in previous Assembly polls in this segment have always been high profile politicians. Talking to Business Line on his being offered the CPM ticket, the 49-year old Mr Jain said though he never took part in active politics, he was associated with election campaigns of CPM stalwarts such as Dr Biplab Dasgupta, Dr Ashok Mitra, Mr Sudhanshu Seal and others in the past. "I accept this responsibility with utmost humility, and welcome this opportunity to do my little bit for the State's development, as I believe the sincere efforts launched by the CM should be fully supported." Mr Jain said during the Emergency period of 1975-77, he was actively involved in the Lok Sabha election of the then Janata Party candidate from Churu (in Rajasthan) Parliamentary Constituency. He clarified that whatever may be the outcome of the election campaign, he would continue with his tax law practice and authorship of books on tax planning and other related subjects. Mr Jain is also actively associated with the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners, Income Tax Bar Association and Association of Corporate Advisors and Executives.
