REALISING that the existing infrastructure facilities provided at the industrial estate are not adequate to attract large investment in the State, West Bengal Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBIIDC) has decided to develop large industrial township combining the facilities such as schools, hospitals, recreation centres and so on.
The first such project (covering over 1,000 acres) is to be developed at Bolepur in Birbhum district.
Addressing the members of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the WBIID Chairman and Executive Officer, Mr Atri Bhattacharya, said, "we are looking for joint venture partner for the Bolepur industrial township project."
A few larger township projects would be developed in joint ventures in different districts, as Kolkata and its adjoining areas had hardly any scope to develop industry due to paucity of land.
Referring to the prevailing situation of the existing industrial estates of WBIIDC, he said that the corporation had so far developed 10 industrial estates, largely for small and medium-scale units.
Except two, all estates were incurring losses.
He thus pleaded the corporation's inability to up-keep maintenance services due to resource constraint.
