Wheels for rail wagons

RAIL wagon-builders are likely to urge the Centre to enlarge the list of approved overseas suppliers of wheel-sets, the demand for which is set to jump following the government decision to allow private companies to launch container services by rail.

As many as 14 firms have responded to the government's offer and these firms will acquire a large number of rakes for transportation of containers. While the orders for rakes could be placed with the wagon-builders, the availability of wheel-sets is going to be critical to their delivery schedules.

The two domestic wheel-set manufacturers, it is feared, may not be able to meet the burgeoning demand. Imports, therefore, will be the obvious choice. Interestingly, the government's list of approved overseas suppliers of wheel-sets contains only one Chinese firm, it is learnt.
