A simpler tax regime

The article `Taxman sings when telephone rings' (Business Line, February 13) makes an interesting observation about the cascading effects of tax particularly in telephone service.

Although the Finance Minister has been making statements about reforms in taxation (both direct and indirect), he has failed to deliver what the industry has expected from him.

Instead of limiting the number of taxes for the sake of simplicity, he has added a number of them in the name of increasing the revenue to the government — STT, FBT, BCTT, to name a few. At the end of the day what an entrepreneur wants is a simple tax structure that guarantees stability and transparency.

In the last few years, the tax structure has seen vast changes making it difficult for industry to cope with tax procedures.

One hopes the Finance Minister will implement the Kelkar report with the objective of simplifying the tax system.
