Co-operatives TN urban co-op bank staff strike work, over wages Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Feb. 20 ALLEGING the State Government of anti-employee stance in extension of benefits including wage revision, employees of urban cooperative banks struck work on Monday, in almost all the districts of Tamil Nadu. About 3,000 employees working in 110 out of the 124 urban cooperative banks in the State observed a day's strike to press their demand for an early revision of the wages, which according to Mr P. Balakrishnan, General Secretary, Tamil Nadu Co-Operative Bank Employees' Association remained overdue for more than 55 months. The association, while reiterating its demand for a 10 per cent hike in the basic and dearness allowance (effective from July 1, 2001), has categorically stated that "in the event of the Government seeking to provide distorted wages by reducing the proposed benefits to the employees of the Urban Cooperative Bank, the cooperative bank employees in their entirety would take recourse to intensification of their agitation and strike to realise their legitimate dues." According to Mr Balakrishnan, these employees were getting comparatively lower wages vis-à-vis their counterparts in other cooperative banks and there was therefore a dire need to resolve rather than delay this issue.
