TN to ban entry of poultry products from Maharashtra

R. Balaji

Chennai , Feb. 20

THE Tamil Nadu Government has decided to impose a ban on entry of poultry products from Maharashtra, where bird flu infection has been detected.

Officials disclosed this after a review meeting with poultry industry representatives on Monday. They were discussing the impact on the trade following the bird flu infection in Maharashtra, and the preventive measures being taken in farms here.

Industry representatives were optimistic that the infection would be contained in Maharashtra as stringent steps have been taken. They pointed out that all the birds within a 3 km radius of the infected farms in Nandurbar, North Maharashtra, were being culled and all birds up to a 10 km radius vaccinated.

Movement of poultry products from Tamil Nadu to Kerala will be restored following discussions between officials of both the States, according to official sources.

Officials said the poultry trade and movement of products between Kerala and Tamil Nadu would remain smooth. It has been decided that consignments from Tamil Nadu would have to be certified by qualified veterinarians before being moved to Kerala.

Initially, following the announcement of the virus infection in Maharashtra, Kerala stopped entry of poultry products from other States. This affected the trade between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

According to official sources, Tamil Nadu sends about 25 lakh eggs a day to Kerala and about 18 lakh broilers a week. However, with the stringent bio-security measures, including monitoring and regular sampling, the farms here are well protected.

According to representatives of the National Egg Coordination Committee, they have represented to the Tamil Nadu Government to clearly inform the public that there was no infection in Tamil Nadu. More than 1,500 samples have been tested in all the poultry centres and they have shown that the stock here was clean. Tests in other southern States have also shown that the farms here were clean.
