HIT hard by the reported incidence of bird flu in parts of Maharashtra, the poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh is busy analysing the impact and drafting a crisis management strategy.

Initial reports said the industry lost Rs 10 crore on Sunday and Rs 7-8 crore on Monday, with consumers shying away from buying chicken as the news spread like wildfire across the State.

"We lead the country in the poultry business. The bird flu reports will affect us most. We are taking stock of the situation," Mr K. Narayana Reddy, President of AP Poultry Federation, told Business Line.

He said various stakeholders would continue to hold parleys on Tuesday to review and finalise a plan of action. Lakhs of people, who depend directly and indirectly on poultry industry, would be affected very badly. Reiterating that what was reported in Maharashtra was not bird flu, he said it was a conspiracy by multinational drug companies to spread false news. "The industry consumes about 1,500 truck loads of maize a day. This will come down drastically due to the crisis. This will affect the farmers," Mr Narayana Reddy pointed out.

Meanwhile, the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) had advertised in local media, disputing the bird flu reports.

"The reports have created confusion among poultry farmers, industry and consumers. We strongly oppose these reports. We assure you that there is no need for panic," it said.
