Shipping Gem of Ennore calls at Vizag port Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Feb. 21 A SPECIAL type of merchant vessel, Gem of Ennore, called at Vizag port at 2300 hours on Sunday for loading of 72,000 tonnes of iron ore for discharge at Chinese ports, according to a press release issued by Esskay Shipping (P) Ltd. The Indian flag panamax vessel of DWT 73,769 tonnes is owned by West Asia Maritime Ltd (Chennai) and the agent is Esskay Shipping. It was built as a gearless Panamax in 2000 at Hitachi Zosen Shipyard in Japan. In 2001, she was converted to a self-unloader with cranes and conveyor in China exclusively for carrying thermal coal from Paradip port in Orissa to Ennore in Tamil Nadu for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, of the Tamil Nadu Government, has chartered the vessel for 10 years. This is one of its kind in the country and one of the six such vessels in the world, says the release. It is capable of discharging 4,000 tonnes per hour by its gear. It is a heavily geared vessel with seven cargo holds, fitted with 7 x 30 tonnes cranes, 7 x 20 CBM grabs, 7 x 70 CBM hoppers connected to a conveyor belt. The vessel is also fitted with a discharge boom of 48.32 meters in length to facilitate discharge even if double banked with other vessels. Though the ship is built to perform as a special purpose vessel, it can also be used as a conventional vessel, adds the release.
