THE Tamil Nadu Government has set up a 24-hour control room at the Animal Husbandry Department to monitor measures to prevent the outbreak of bird flu virus in the poultry farms, according to an official press release.

To monitor and coordinate the preventive measures, a high level committee will be created under the Chief Secretary.

At the district level, the Collectors will lead teams with representatives of various departments including the Police, Forestry, Animal Husbandry, Public Health, Rural Development, the release said.

A close watch will be kept on the bird sanctuaries in the State.

The press release said that preventive measures such as the ban on poultry products and feed raw materials from Maharashtra and chemical spraying of vehicles from other States at the border check posts will be enforced stringently.

Poultry farmers have been instructed on the safety measures and protective gear for farm workers.

Over 1,249 blood samples from poultry farms and migratory birds have been tested and the results show that Tamil Nadu is free from bird flu virus. The surveillance will, however, be maintained, the release said.

The Government has also urged the public to report instances of sudden mortality among birds, including poultry. The public are also instructed to inform the authorities if anyone develops the symptoms of bird flu, such as breathing difficulty, the release said.
