Poultry Chicken prices crash 35 pc G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , Feb. 22 BATTERED by the avian flu fear, the demand for poultry products continues to remain low. The low consumer response is reflected in the slashing of farm-gate price of broilers announced by the State broiler coordination committee (BCC). The prices have been cut by over 35 per cent in the last two days. The BCC, which brought down the wholesale price of live bird from last Saturday's Rs 38 to Rs 28 a kg on Tuesday amidst the turmoil caused by the bird flu incidence in Maharashtra has further brought it down to Rs 24 on Wednesday. "Though right now the consumption demand for broiler is down by 40 per cent, it is too premature to actually estimate the market loss. Some indication could be possible only after a week or so," said a source in the BCC. Leading members of poultry industry are debating on the course of crisis management the industry should adopt to pull the industry out of the current crisis considering the high stakes involved in organised poultry farming commanding a strong base in rural economy. There has been no improvement in the egg market either and there has been no significant movement in supplies of eggs. According to table egg trade sources, while there has been some movement in the egg market in southern Tamil Nadu, egg supplies from the State to the neighbouring Kerala practically remained negligent affected by lack of demand from the consumers there, sources in the Namakkal-based poultry trade said. Though officially no changes were made on Wednesday in the wholesale procurement rate for the table egg and Tuesday's rate of Rs 1.20 per piece was retained for the day too, the fall in demand including the total derailment in shell egg export in the wake of ban by Gulf countries continue to cast the cloud of gloom over the State's egg trade.
