`MSP for arecanut unwarranted'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Feb. 23

WITH the bullish trend prevailing in arecanut market there is no need for the Government to introduce minimum support price (MSP) for arecanut crop, according to the Karnataka Minister for Fisheries and Horticulture, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday after reviewing the progress in various government departments, he said the Government had fixed Rs 60 a kg as MSP for white arecanut last year. But the market conditions were different then, as the growers were not getting a good price for their commodity.

However, there is an improvement in the prices of white arecanut this year. On an average, the growers get Rs 62-65 a kg for white arecanut. Even the arecanut cooperatives are hopeful that the price will go further up in the near future.

"In such a situation, there is no need for the Government to come out with MSP for white arecanut. We will think about the matter, if there is a downward trend in the prices of white arecanut," he said.

Growers' concern: Asked about the concerns of growers over the import of arecanut, Mr Shetty said the President of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd and the elected representatives from the region are in Delhi to discuss this issue with the Union Government officials. They will discuss about the need for coming out with a legal framework to curb the import of arecanut to the country.
