Egg prices fall below Re 1

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Feb. 23

TABLE egg procurement price, especially in Tamil Nadu, hit a new low on Thursday in the face of the continued consumer apathy towards poultry products due to the avian flu fear.

The severe demand recession forced the Namakkal-based NECC's zonal committee to drastically lower the table egg wholesale price to 90 paise from last week's Rs 1.20 per piece.

With practically very little off-take in the market for the fourth day in succession since the breakout of news on avian flu in Maharashtra, the egg trade had to settle for the 25 per cent cut in rate as the producers in Western Tamil Nadu are struggling to tackle the mounting stock of shell eggs.

With the demand from the neighbouring Kerala, the key market for Tamil Nadu's table egg remaining still quite lukewarm, there is no let up in the trade's agony. The plight of the broiler producers is not any different and the drastic cut in wholesale price effected on Wednesday by the growers' body, broiler coordination committee, has failed to make any dent in the market.
