AFFORDABLE BROADBAND

Mumbai , Feb. 23

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and HCL Infosystems Ltd are jointly offering personal computers bundled with BSNL's DataOne broadband connection in the Maharashtra circle.

The joint offer has already been announced in a few other circles of BSNL, said Mr Animesh Datta, Vice-President Sales, HCL Infosystems, at a news conference on Thursday.

HCL is offering a range of PCs costing between Rs 18,490 and Rs 38,890, payable in instalments spread over 40 months that can be as low as Rs 451 per month. .

BSNL's DataOne's lowest monthly rental for a speed of 256 kbps is Rs 250, with various tariff options available depending on speed and usage.

The PCs are being available at a discount of between 7 per cent and 12 per cent to the market price.

The PC comes with a three-year warranty and a free ADSL modem required for broadband connectivity.

The idea is to increase PC penetration as well as broadband usage, said Mr Kuldeep Goyal , Chief General Manager, BSNL, Maharashtra circle.

Initially the PC-scheme will be available in seven cities in the circle.

Broadband connectivity in this circle is increasing by about 250 a day, said Mr Goyal. The circle has 39,000 broadband users and aims to get 85,000 by the end of March this year, he said.

There are 2.52 lakh dial-up customers; and BSNL has extended an offer to all of them to move to broadband, he said

The PCs can be booked through BSNL's customer service centres or through HCL dealers. Live demonstrations and road shows will promote the scheme.
