Apollo plans oncology centre in Ahmedabad

The Apollo Hospitals Group will invest nearly Rs 100 crore to set up a new Oncology (Cancer) centre in Ahmedabad and two new hospitals in Rajkot and Udaipur.

The company is setting up two `First Med' centres, which are smaller hospitals with about 50-bed capacity, in Rajkot and Udaipur at a cost of about Rs 20 crore each, Mr Anil Maini, President, Corporate Development, said here on Wednesday.

The new comprehensive cancer care centre at Apollo's multi-specialty hospital in Ahmedabad is expected to become operational by June 2006. The Apollo Group has tied up with Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Centre, Bakersfield (USA) and the Ahmedabad facility will be modelled on the American hospital.

Apollo Ahmedabad is also in the process of setting up 10 new tele-medicine centres, out of which seven will be in the Kutch district, two in association with the State Government and one mobile unit. The company already has 10 tele-medicine centres that cover Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, according to the CEO, Apollo Ahmedabad, Dr Alexander Kuruvilla.

Other expansion activities include beefing up of training infrastructure for medical professionals and Apollo Ahmedabad is setting up a nursing school, a school for paramedics and a centre for hospital administration, Dr Kuruvilla said.
