Bird flu concerns

The unhygienic conditions in which poultry is bred in India and dense population are the major factors responsible for the recent avian influenza epidemic in the country.

Bird flu has become an issue of major concern all over the world with fears of a large-scale epidemic once the virus mutates and spreads by human contact.

The Government has moved fast to isolate Nandurbar district from the rest of country. The process of culling nine lakh birds spread over 20 villages has started. The 20 samples from humans that have been sent for laboratory investigations will reveal how severely bird flu has hit India.

It is now incumbent on the Government to ensure sufficient supply of vaccines, to the potential areas as well.
