What more appropriate success story than the reinvention of the coffee to illustrate redesign of a newspaper. Industry leaders and a cross section of Business Line's readers got a taste of it from Dr Mario Garcia, Garcia Media, who leads an international design team that has redesigned over a 500 newspapers. Starbucks, Dr Mario Garcia said, is among his favourite stories of taking `something old and traditional and making it interesting.' How do you make the coffee that has been around for 460 years and make it interesting, he asked. Starbucks rethought the café culture. Cafes have always been meeting points of not just the coffee drinkers but also the thinkers, the book writers. Today a Starbucks outlet offers the same with the new gadgets. All their cafes are wireless environments, "I often walk into a Starbucks so I can use my laptop computer," Mr Garcia said. Coffee itself has undergone so many changes. It is offered in many new forms and names but at the bottom of it all it is still coffee, he pointed out. The café introduces new themes, even an opportunity for the lonely to meet a partner - espresso dating. But may be a newspaper cannot offer that, he quipped as the audience tittered at the idea.
