Kochi region excise revenue

Kochi Central Excise Commissionerate, which has jurisdiction over the districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki and parts of Alappuzha, has collected central excise duty to the tune of Rs 2,644.49 crore up to January as against Rs 2,190.32 crore in the year-ago period, higher by 20.73 per cent..

The target for the Commissionerate, which is the largest collector of central excise duty in Kerala, for the year is Rs 3,875 crore, said Mr P. Ayyam Perumal, Commissioner, Central Excise and Customs.

Of the total revenue realised, contribution from petroleum sector such as motor spirit, HSD, LPG, kerosene, furnace oil is Rs 2,426.30 crore and from others such as compound rubber, tyres and tubes, chemicals is Rs 218.19 crore.

CONTRIBUTORS

The major contributors of central excise revenue are Kochi Refineries, MRF Kottayam, Hindustan Organic Chemicals, Hindustan Lever Ltd, TCC.

He said service tax collections have registered an increase of 43.29 per cent by collecting Rs 187.54 crore (Rs 130.88 crore) till January this year.

The major service tax contributors are BSNL, Cochin Port Trust and Escotel Mobile.

This year the Commissionerate expects to net around Rs 215 crore.

HELP CENTRE

The department has set up a help centre at Ernakulam, headed by a Superintendent, to clarify doubts of the assesses and the public which is functioning at Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

There is a public grievance committee with four members representing trade as members, which meets quarterly.

The Commissionerate attends to the needs of the assesses expeditiously. It has a Regional Advisory Committee, with representations from different sections of industry as members.

The committee meets once in three months where doubts raised/ clarifications sought for by the assessee are discussed and sorted out.
