Poultry Industry & Economy - Health Unsold stocks worry poultry farmers G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , Feb. 24 Poultry farmers are faced with a near wash-out in demand for chicken and eggs this weekend in the light of the persistent fear in the market on avian flu. "We used to have 60 per cent of the weekly sale of broilers happening during three days starting from Thursday for the week-end consumption but yesterday and today, there has been practically no movement of chickens either in local market or in the supply to the Kerala markets," lamented an official of the Broiler Coordination Committee (BCC). The Namakkal based poultry farmers' bodies representing the layer eggs too are concerned over the mounting unsold egg stocks.
Clueless
With no clue on how long the consumer would stay away from poultry, shell egg producers are seeking to slash the rates further as a way out to get some movement in the market for the perishable. Though the official procurement rate for table egg is put at 90 paise per egg, wholesale egg trade is said to be offering further discount up to 20 paise or so from the official rate. Yet, there has been no movement in the market. Considering the stockpiling of the live birds, the BCC today further brought down its procurement price to Rs 18 from yesterday's farm-gate price of Rs 24. In the meantime, the Namakkal-based Tamilnadu Poultry Farmers Association has decided to host a `chicken and egg' mela in Namakkal on Saturday .
