Now, MNCs hiring `sourcing heads'

Bangalore , Feb. 24

Last week, a Mumbai-based recruiter received a curious mandate from an MNC: A senior sourcing professional to help the parent company buy pens and pencils from India. And the salary: Anywhere between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 60 lakh per annum.

"This is not really strange or surprising," says Mr K. Sudarshan, Managing Partner, EMA Partners International, a global search firm. "The sourcing function is getting big in the country and mind you, it's not just in traditional retail or textile sectors, which have been doing it for some years now."

In fact, several FMCG, pharma, engineering and auto majors (Pfizer, J&J, Cummins, Volvo) have or are in the process of hiring `sourcing heads' for the parent company, he says.

Mr Sudarshan gives an instance of an MNC having saved over $100 million in COGS (cost of goods sold) in the last one year alone after moving the sourcing process to India.

Auto components, fasteners, lifestyle companies are also scouting for sourcing talent in the country, says Mr Kris Lakshmikanth, Managing Director, The Head Hunters India.

"India is also a hub for sourcing products from neighbouring countries like China, The Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, etc."

But does the country have enough expertise to manage such large sourcing operations, some running into several billion-dollar worth of deals? Mr Sudhakar Balakrishnan, Director and COO, Adecco Peopleone Consulting, says that MNCs no longer doubt the Indian manager's talent and capability to scale up. "There are even cases of several Indian expats having returned to the country because of the exciting opportunities and salaries in the area."

Though hands-on industry experts are preferred for these jobs, consultants from companies such as AT Kearney and KSA Technopak are also being targeted. And annual take-home could be anywhere between Rs 60 lakh and Rs 1 crore for sourcing chiefs, says Mr Sudhakar.
