High demand fuels tea prices at Kochi sales

Prices of all tea varieties surged due to high demand at the Kochi auction.

Of the quantity of 8,87,000 kg on offer in the dust category, the high-priced CTC was dearer by Rs 3 to Rs 4. Medium and below medium CTC was higher by Rs 4 to Rs 8.

The bolder CTC was lapped up by exporters. Orthodox highgrowns were steady, while mediums and secondaries were higher by Rs 4 to Rs 8.

The best CTC varieties commanded prices between Rs 68 and Rs 70, medium CTC realised Rs 60-66 and below medium was quoted at Rs 55-60.

Highgrowns BOPD fetched a price of Rs 131, while medium BOPD was quoted at Rs 50-55. Secondaries were quoted at Rs 45-48, while residuals were Rs 40-43.

Leaf variety

The leaf sale also witnessed a high demand and the quantity on offer was 4,02,000 kg. Orthodox medium brokens and fannings were dearer by Rs 3 to Rs 6. Best quality highgrowns were dearer, while other highgrowns were steady.

CTC was dearer by Re 1 to Rs 2. Medium orthodox leaf grades witnessed a high demand from exporters to Libya and Tunisia. Highgrowns witnessed a steady demand from exporters to CIS.

Nilgiri selection

The best Nilgiri varieties commanded prices between Rs 60 and Rs 80, medium Orthodox realised Rs 44-50.

The best CTC leaf fetched prices of Rs 58-61, while medium CTC realised Rs 53-58.

In the dust category, Koadanaad CL.BOPD fetched the best prices of Rs 131, followed by Pasuparai SFD at Rs 92.

In the leaf varieties, Sutton FOP realised the best prices of Rs 127, followed by both Chamraj OP and Nonsuch FOP at Rs 122 each.
