Shipping Ministry to study NH, Vallarpadam link project Our Bureau
Kochi , Feb. 27 The Union Minister for Shipping, Mr T.R. Baalu, has said that the clearance for National Highway link to the proposed International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) site on Vallarpadam Island would be taken up with the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Ministry has suggested an elevated corridor for the proposed National Highway link, he said and hoped that the environmental clearance for the project would be obtained shortly. The four-lane road link will be 17.2-km long and will connect Vallarpadam Island to National Highway No. 47 at a point in suburban Kalamassery. The project is estimated to cost Rs 374 crore. The Ministry has also directed the State Government to look into the problems faced by the ICTT project with regard to rail connectivity to the project site.
Infrastructure development
As part of its plans to improve infrastructure in the port and shipping sectors, he said the Government has earmarked about Rs 1 lakh crore till 2011-12. While Rs 60,000 crore would be for improving facilities in various ports, Rs 40,000 crore would be spent on the shipping sector. He said the Government is giving utmost importance for infrastructure development, which is evident from the fact that the Prime Minister is heading the Infrastructure Committee himself. According to the Minister, the Government has identified 14 projects for Kochi Port under the National Maritime Development Programme at an investment of Rs 7,920 crore. The 7-year programme includes deepening drafts up to 14.6 metres, road and rail connectivity, POL capacity expansion, expansion of container handling capacity etc.
