Economic Survey Congestion at major ports rising Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 27 Even as the cargo volume handled at major ports is going up, congestion also appears to be increasing with the average pre-berth waiting time and turnaround time moving up, reflected the Economic Survey. The average turnaround time for ships at the major ports between April-December 2005 is up at 3.53 days compared with 3.41 days (2004-05) and 3.45 days (2003-04), it said. The pre-berthing time at major ports (on port account) has also been increasing from 4.86 (2003-04) hours to 6.03 hours (2004-05) to 9.16 hours (April-December 2005). Up to December 2005, cargo handled by major ports registered a 12.4 per cent growth over the last year. There has been an impressive growth of container traffic at 14.2 per cent per annum during the first five years ended 2004-05. India's largest container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port handled 2.37 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2004-05, where as Hong Kong handled 21.93 million TEUs in 2004 and Dubai handled 6.43 million TEUs.
